History of Philippines

The First Contact (1966–1970)

Between 1966 and 1970, the first contacts were made with the predominantly Catholic yet impoverished population of the Philippines. Early attempts to establish a mission in Butuan City were not successful, but they planted the first seeds of a future foundation.

A New Beginning (1992–1995)

In 1992, the congregation renewed its efforts through the initiative of two Dutch Sisters whose perseverance and faith eventually led to the successful establishment of the congregation’s first mission in April 1995, with the support and participation of additional Sisters from abroad.

An International Community

From its beginning, the community of Sisters in the Philippines had an international character, with members from the Netherlands, Ireland, the United States, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Responding to the call of the General Council, these Sisters came together to establish and strengthen the new Region.

Despite challenges such as cultural differences, the wearing of the habit and veil, and language barriers that sometimes caused tension, the Sisters persevered in unity. Through years of dedication and formation — and with the guidance of priests and Sisters from other congregations — the Philippine foundation grew into a vibrant community committed to serving those most in need.

Toward an International Province (2017–2023)

Following the General Chapter of 2017, the Sisters in the Philippines joined the merging project with the communities in Brazil and the United States, forming an International Province that beautifully embodies cultural and spiritual diversity.

In 2023, the community in the United States officially became part of this International Province, uniting the provinces of Brazil, the Philippines, and the United States, with its headquarters located in Brazil. This union strengthened bonds of communion and global collaboration, reflecting the truly international and merciful spirit of the congregation.

Leadership and Mission (2024–Present)

On July 4, 2024, the International Province held its Provincial Chapter, during which a new Provincial Council was formed — representing the congregation’s international richness and unity in diversity:
History Brazil

  • Sr. Paula Frassinetti (Brazil) — Provincial

  • Sr. Mary Ellen Ryley (United States) — Vice Provincial

  • Sr. Josephine Corpuz (Philippines) — Councilor

Together, this leadership team integrates cultures, strengthens bonds, and reaffirms the congregation’s mission of putting mercy into action.
