St. Petrus Community

Location : Waikabubak, Indonesia

St. Petrus Community was founded on May 19, 1991, in response to the educational and pastoral needs of the people of West Sumba. The request for the presence of the SCMM sisters was submitted by Mgr. Kherubim Pareira, SVD, Bishop of Weetebula, together with Father Chrispinus V. Reberu, Parish Priest of Waikabubak, in 1990. Following up on this request, the SCMM Provincial Council sent four sisters to begin their ministry in Sumba. The sisters lived temporarily in the rectory until the convent was renovated on June 10, 1991.

The ministry of the SCMM sisters in Sumba is to managed a kindergarten, junior high school, girls' dormitory, boys' dormitory, and orphanage. In addition, the sisters were also involved in pastoral work in parishes, stations, and neighborhoods. On August 27, 1998, the sisters built a convent, which was inaugurated by Mgr. Kherubim Pareira, SVD.

To this day, the St. Petrus Community remains faithful in serving with compassion. The Sisters continue to carry on and develop their ministry in the fields of education, social work, and pastoral care. Currently, social services are being expanded through the opening of a daycare center and the maintenance of livestock and agriculture.
