Postulancy Houses

Location : Sibolga, Nias, NTT Indonesia

The Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Mary, Mother of Mercy (SCMM) Province of Indonesia has three postulant formation houses spread across three regions, namely Sibolga, Nias, and Flores. The first formation house was established in Sibolga in 1952. This place witnessed the early growth of vocations in the SCMM Congregation in Indonesia. The first two Indonesian sisters who underwent formation there were Sr. Elisabeth Tjia and Sr. Agnes Tampubolon.

For 55 years, Sibolga was the center for the formation of postulants. However, over time, the number of candidates increased and they came from various regions in Indonesia. This situation posed new challenges, especially in terms of distance and convenience for the candidates. If a postulant had to withdraw or be sent home, the journey back to their hometown often took a long time and incurred high costs. Based on these considerations, the Provincial Leadership Council, which at that time was led by Sr. Margaretha Gultom, SCMM, decided to open three postulant formation houses in different regions: Sibolga, Nias, and Flores. This decision was realized in 2007, after much prayer and careful consideration.

Postulant formation in Nias began in 2007. Initially, formation activities were still carried out at the St. Yosef Gunung Sitoli Community, located at Jalan Karet No. 33C, Gunung Sitoli.

Then, after a special formation house was completed in 2019, the postulants were moved to Jalan Pelut-Binaka, located not far from the St. Yosef community. In eastern Indonesia, the formation of postulants also began in 2007. The postulants first lived and were formed at the SCMM St. Mateus Community, Nebe, Flores. Two years later, after the St.Mark Community and Wairklau Girls' Dormitory were completed in 2009, the formation of postulants was officially moved to the new location.

With the opening of formation houses in Sibolga, Nias, and Flores, the SCMM Congregation is increasingly able to accompany prospective sisters more closely and in accordance with the context of their region of origin. Each formation house becomes a garden of growth for vocations, a place where postulants learn to love God and their neighbors in the spirit of Mary, Mother of Mercy.
