St. Mark Community was founded on July 28, 1890, by Mother Mathildis and several sisters from the Netherlands in response to the educational and pastoral needs of the people of Flores. Despite facing various challenges, including a malaria epidemic, the sisters remained faithful in serving the community. Due to unhealthy environmental conditions, in 1899 their ministry was moved to Lela, where they established a dormitory for poor children. However, in 1917 the SCMM Sisters left Flores due to the large number of sisters who died of malaria, and their work was then continued by the Sisters Van Steyl.
After 72 years, the Archbishop of Ende, Mgr. Donatus Djagom, SVD, invited the SCMM to return to work in Maumere. This invitation led to the establishment of the St. Mark Community, which was officially founded on July 11, 1989. As their work developed, on July 7, 1990, the SCMM took over the management of the St.Thomas Morus Girls' Dormitory and then built a new convent on land given by the diocese. Today, the sisters serve in various fields, such as managing the Yos Sudarso Kindergarten and Elementary School, the Girls' Dormitory, teaching at St.Gabriel High School, and being active in pastoral work in the church and the surrounding community.
