SCMM Congregation began its missionary work in Indonesia on July 12, 1885, in Padang, West Sumatra. The official invitation came from Mgr. Godschalk, which was accepted by Mother Syncletica, the superior general of SCMM in Tilburg, Netherlands. Nine pioneer sisters departed with faith and a spirit of sacrifice, traveling a long journey through stormy seas until they finally arrived and settled at St. Leo community, the former residence of the Governor, which later became the center of their activities.
The early work of the SCMM began with opening schools and skills courses such as sewing and embroidery, then developed into dormitories, orphanages, and the
St. Elisabeth Medical Center. Although their work was interrupted during the Japanese occupation, it was revived after independence and continues to serve in the fields of education, social welfare, and pastoral care.
The spirit of SCMM is rooted in love and the desire to uplift the dignity of society through education that is open to all. They are present to expand learning opportunities, nurture faith, and bring love and compassion regardless of social background.
