St. Thomas Rasul Community

Location : Medan, Indonesia

St. Thomas Rasul Community was founded out of concern by the SCMM Sisters who were studying at the Catholic University and also by P. Elias Sembiring, OFM Cap, as director of UNIKA (Catholic University), regarding promiscuity and drug abuse that was rampant among young people. Therefore, the Sisters were asked to manage a special dormitory for UNIKA female students. The building used was a vacant former Three-year Diploma Faculty of Economics building. The dormitory began operating in September 2006.

On August 31, 2022, this collaboration ended. The congregation built a new convent in Tanjung Selamat, Medan. During the six months of construction, the sisters from the UNIKA community temporarily stayed in a nearby community. On January 7, 2023, the St. Thomas Rasul community in Tanjung Selamat was inaugurated and blessed by the Archbishop of Medan, Mgr. Kornelius Sipayung, OFM Cap.

Currently, the St. Thomas Rasul community is inhabited by young sisters who study at UNIKA, Sr. Fernanda as a law lecturer at UNIKA and Sr. Margaretha as the community leader, managing a hydroponic business together with the young sisters. In addition to academic activities and internal work, the Sisters are also active in pastoral ministry, involved in environmental prayer, and assist in church ministry.
