Stella Matutina Community was founded on December 8, 1987, in Lhokseumawe, Aceh, which at that time was experiencing rapid growth as the largest natural gas industry in Southeast Asia. However, from 1990 to 2005, the region became a center of conflict due to the activities of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). At the request of the Parish Priest of Banda Aceh, Fr. James, SJ, the SCMM Sisters came to serve the Catholic community who were not receiving spiritual guidance, despite the threatening and terror-filled situation in the region.
The SCMM's ministry officially began on August 11, 1984, with Sr. Aloysia Telaumbanua, and on December 28, 1987, two Sisters were sent to Lhokseumawe to continue the work that had already begun. The Sisters' work included kindergarten education, catechesis, faith formation for catechumens and mothers, and guidance for the Legion of Mary group. In 1988, they began teaching the Catholic religion in public schools after obtaining an operating permit from the government.
Despite facing limitations on school construction permits and social challenges from a fanatical community, the Sisters remained faithful in their work, even expanding their services to Bireun and Takengon. As the situation improved in the 2000s, the Sisters of the Stella Matutina community continued their educational and pastoral work faithfully and lovingly.
