The Stella Duce Community was founded on August 12, 1991, inspired by the concern of Fr. Alfred Kugler, OFM Cap, for the small farmers of Amandraya, who struggled to obtain basic necessities due to the absence of local shops and markets. To respond to their needs, Fr. Alfred opened a grocery store and a rice mill as a social enterprise. However, due to poor management, the business eventually collapsed.
To sustain and strengthen this important service, the SCMM congregation was invited to take over. Three sisters from the Bintang Laut community were sent:
Sr. Martina Dachi, SCMM, as community leader; Sr. Viktoria Sijabat, SCMM, to manage the shop; and Sr. Anastasia Larosa, SCMM, to provide pastoral care for youth and families. Their arrival brought significant transformation. They opened a dormitory for elementary and junior high school students and cultivated a vegetable garden to support the community’s income.
The sisters’ simple, friendly, and loving service deeply touched the people, drawing them closer to God and to one another. The grocery store expanded into a general shop, and the community later established a kindergarten, managed Family Welfare Education (PKK), and offered basic health services.
Since its foundation, the St. Stella Duce SCMM community has remained actively involved in nurturing the spiritual and social life of Amandraya. Through the ministry of St. Anthony, its pastoral work, and the formation of Catholic youth, it continues to be a living sign of God’s love in the community.
